The Cape Town Open Education Declaration

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

The Cape Town Open Education Declaration arises from a small but lively meeting convened in Cape Town in September 2007. The aim of this meeting was to accelerate efforts to promote open resources, technology and teaching practices in education.

Convened by the Open Society Institute and the Shuttleworth Foundation, the meeting gathered participants with many points of view from many nations. This group discussed ways to broaden and deepen their open education efforts by working together.

To my recently added friends

To all my new Classroom 2.0 friends (most of whom chose me as a friend in a workshop) I welcome your participation in this network. I hope to be a better contributor in the coming months. NECC was great. I think my favorite part is talking to other attendees and learning what is happening in other schools. I left San Antonio a little overwhelmed, but ready to start another school year with fresh ideas. I'm still convinced that web2.0 tools will greatly impact learning.

NECC Reflections

While I have already wrote a few things about NECC at my blog, I just wanted to say here that I enjoyed joining some conversations with fellow CR2.0 folks at the Birds of a Feather session at NECC in San Antonio! Hearing the exchange of ideas was great, as was the encouragement to use this tool. It really does make a difference to see real people and hear real advice and concern, and I hope "we" continue to meet both at NECC and elsewhere.

Aliterate Teachers

Okay. So I'm sitting at a "Literacy Institute" and I'm surprised by a comment from a teacher who says she doesn't like to read. Doesn't like to read? An elementary teacher, in charge of teaching kids to READ, doesn't like to READ herself? What's up with THAT? That's like a boatsa… Continue

Commitment Phobe

I just attended a great panel discussion on Social Networking in Education at NECC and what stuck to me was a statement made that you have to make a commitment to participating a little each day to actively engage in a network. I know this is true, how can I even see what the possibilities are if I have never even tried it? Think about the teachers or students who have been given a tool and end up creating something that you would have never envisioned! We are really just scratching the surface… Continue
